Anurag Kashyap Reacts to Epstein Files: ‘It’s Just a Random Email’
Over the last few days, the highly controversial Epstein Files, related to the criminal activities of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, have been widely circulated online, igniting global discussions. These documents have caused several notable names to resurface, with allegations of potential associations or involvement, although many remain unverified. Indian film personalities are not exempt from the speculation. Filmmaker Mira Nair’s name was mentioned earlier, and more recently, director Anurag Kashyap has been linked to these files.
According to unverified documents circulating online, Kashyap is mentioned in an email as the “Bollywood guy” and a “Famous Bollywood director,” allegedly tied to an event associated with Epstein that was scheduled to occur in Beijing in 2017. A screenshot of this email has gained significant traction on platforms like Reddit and X. However, Kashyap has firmly denied any connection to Epstein or the event, labeling the claims as baseless and attention-seeking.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Kashyap expressed his confusion, stating, “I have no clue about this. I receive about 15 invitations a month as a speaker, but I rarely respond. Also, I have never been to Beijing in my life!” He raised doubts about the credibility of the circulated material, saying, “It’s just a random email, that’s self-explanatory. The clickbait in my name is more popular than my films.”
Social media users swiftly reacted to the mention of Kashyap’s name in the screenshot. One Reddit user remarked, “Is this Epstein’s files or Chitragupt’s accounting book? Everyone’s in there. I’m afraid my name might show up somehow.” Another comment noted, “Many wealthy or influential people participated in Epstein’s criminal activities; that list is extensive. We should pursue them, not those merely invited to these events.”
On a professional note, Kashyap last directed the two-part crime drama Nishaanchi and is preparing for the Indian release of his film Kennedy, which is set to debut later this month. The film has already been showcased at several international film festivals, following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023.
