Guwahati, Feb 5: A significant 15 percent increase in the defense budget has been hailed by Lt Gen Rana Pratap Kalita (Retd), former General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command of the Army. He emphasized that this budget hike will bolster India’s self-reliance in the defense sector.

In an interview with The Assam Tribune, Lt Gen Kalita stated that the unprecedented increase in the defense budget is crucial for the nation’s security, which he views as vital for the country’s overall development. He pointed out that India faces threats from neighboring countries, making defense preparedness essential.

Kalita noted that since gaining independence, India has consistently confronted hostility from Pakistan, having fought several wars with the country. While relations with China have improved somewhat, potential confrontations remain due to unresolved border issues. He emphasized that until these disputes are settled, tensions are likely to persist. Furthermore, he mentioned that India’s current relationship with Bangladesh is also strained, reiterating the importance of robust defense measures in light of these geopolitical challenges.

The former general stressed the need for a strong navy, not only for national defense but also to safeguard critical maritime routes essential for trade. He highlighted that the Indian Navy must closely monitor both maritime paths and the broader Indian Ocean, necessitating the procurement of new vessels.

As warfare increasingly adapts to technological advancements, Kalita underlined the importance of India becoming self-sufficient in defense technology. He warned that in times of crisis, the country may not receive necessary technology from external sources. Continuous upgrades in technology are essential. He advocated for investments in new drone technologies, missile systems, air defense capabilities, and aircraft, asserting that budget enhancements are crucial to achieve these goals.
