Tripura Bar Association Protests Against Removal of Consumer Court Leader
The Tripura Bar Association gathered again on February 5, 2026, in Agartala to discuss the ongoing demand for the removal of Judge Gautam Sarkar, the President of the West District Consumer Court. Lawyers unanimously decided to intensify their protests until their demands are met.
Judge Sarkar has faced serious allegations of frequently attending court under the influence of alcohol and even consuming liquor within his chamber. Staff members have accused him of occasionally behaving inappropriately with employees during such episodes. Reports indicate that these incidents have been occurring over an extended period, leading to significant outrage among court staff and lawyers alike.
Previously, the Bar Association opted to boycott the court and formally lodged a complaint with the relevant government minister, calling for immediate action against Sarkar. During today’s meeting, the legal professionals reaffirmed their commitment to continue the protest until his removal is realized. One lawyer mentioned that the association has resolved not to appear in court indefinitely and has given the government three days to respond, although they have yet to receive acknowledgment regarding their demand.
The gravity of the situation is further highlighted by remarks that female lawyers now refuse to enter the President’s chamber. The association emphasized that the boycott and protests will persist until the government takes decisive and effective action.
