Assam Rifles Dismantle Drug Trade, Seize Rs 38 Crore in Tripura and Mizoram
Assam Rifles, in collaboration with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, has conducted a series of coordinated anti-narcotics operations across Tripura and Mizoram, resulting in the seizure of drugs worth over Rs 38 crore and the arrest of several suspects.
On January 24, security personnel intercepted a Tata truck on National Highway 8 in Khowai district, Tripura, based on specific intelligence. A thorough search of the vehicle yielded 160,000 Yaba tablets, valued at approximately Rs 16 crore. One individual, a resident of Sribhumi district in Assam, was arrested, and the truck was seized for further investigation.
Earlier in the week, another operation took place in Champhai district of Mizoram, prompted by credible intelligence regarding cross-border drug trafficking. Troops halted a man riding a Kenbo motorcycle in Ngur village. Upon searching him, they recovered 2.2 kg of methamphetamine tablets, a psychotropic substance with an estimated international market value of Rs 6.6 crore. The suspect, identified as Lalhmangaihzuala, was taken into custody and transferred to the Excise and Narcotics Department in Champhai for legal action.
A third operation in the same district involved the interception of a suspicious two-wheeler. When challenged, both the rider and a passenger fled the scene. A subsequent search of the abandoned vehicle uncovered 2.057 kg of Heroin No. 4, valued at around Rs 15.42 crore, along with a mobile phone. The recovered items were handed over to local police for further investigation.
These operations underscore the Assam Rifles’ ongoing commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks in the Northeast, particularly in light of heightened security measures leading up to Republic Day, when vigilance across the region is significantly intensified.
