When most children are learning to speak their first words, Thaaragai Aarathana was already mastering the language of the ocean. Now 12 years old, this young environmental activist has been cleaning up beaches since she was just three years old, introducing her to a lifetime commitment to ocean conservation. Her father, a certified scuba diver, took her to the sea when she was only three days old, leading her to embrace the ocean in a way that inspires others. “Just like Moana, the ocean chose me before I could even walk,” she reflects.

Growing up surrounded by waves, reefs, and marine life, the ocean became a source of hope for Aarathana from an early age. By the time she turned three, she began weekly beach clean-ups with her father, picking up trash along the shores. This family tradition transformed into a meaningful mission when Aarathana became increasingly aware of plastic pollution, noticing bottles, wrappers, and bags littering the beaches. This realization sparked a deep inner resolve not to ignore the growing problem.

At just five years old, Aarathana took her efforts further by diving to collect plastic waste from the sea. By the age of seven, she had already contributed significantly to removing considerable amounts of plastic pollution. Understanding the importance of raising awareness about plastic pollution, she sought to engage others creatively. Participating in underwater dance performances and using art, she successfully captured public attention, provoking discussions about ocean conservation.

In 2024, Aarathana swam across the Palk Strait from Sri Lanka to India, completing the journey in under 12 hours. This remarkable feat was part of her campaign to “Save the Ocean,” continuing her commitment to collect waste and inspire change. Now at 12, she embraces the title of “ocean’s little girl” with pride, using her platform to motivate others towards a cleaner, healthier planet.
