Unlocking the Future: The Inspiring Rise of Young Innovator Prashant Lamichaney

Hailing from Temi Tarku in South Sikkim, Prashant Lamichaney embodies the spirit of a new generation of grassroots innovators. His ideas spring from profound lived experiences, curiosity, and a strong connection to community life. Growing up in a culturally vibrant and resilient rural setting, Prashant’s formative years were shaped not merely by textbooks but through keen observation, experimentation, and hands-on learning. “Temi was more than my village. It was my first classroom, laboratory, and source of inspiration,” he recounts.

His journey in science took flight at Temi Senior Secondary School, where nurturing teachers fostered curiosity that extended beyond the standard curriculum. A pivotal influence was his chemistry teacher, whose lab sessions ignited Prashant’s passion for experiments and their real-world applications. Even as a sixth grader, he devoted his free periods to the lab, absorbing knowledge through observation, inquiry, and trial and error.

Prashant’s interest naturally evolved into electronics as he began working with wires, circuits, and discarded components to construct simple machines and model vehicles. Encouraged by his teachers, he embarked on more complex projects like robotic arms, rescue robots, and automatic street lights during his SUPW activities. His experience with computer hardware and system assembly honed his skills in design and innovation, which earned him the title of “Junior Scientist of the School” in 2012.

Support from home was equally critical. His father, Dhan Bahadhur Lamichaney, a TV and electronics mechanic, became his first mentor in technical skills, while his mother, Aruna Lamichaney, consistently inspired him. Surrounded by broken appliances and electronic scraps, Prashant learned the art of dismantling, repairing, and reassembling. “Mistakes were common, but discouragement was never part of the process,” he recalls.

Over the years, Prashant has developed several practical innovations to address everyday challenges. These include an Anti-Theft Charger, inspired by a mobile theft incident during train travel, an Eco Spoon combining spoon and napkin for sustainability, an Anti-Careless Mask born from the COVID-19 pandemic, and various innovations tailored to reduce strain on traditional load carriers. Some of these projects are currently in the process of being patented, although specific technical details remain confidential.

Participating in state, regional, and national science exhibitions marked a pivotal point in his journey. One noteworthy project, the Wireless Switch Control System, garnered recognition at various levels and bolstered his confidence and communication skills. Along with his classmates and mentors, Prashant played a role in establishing an Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) at his school, significantly changing the culture of innovation and problem-solving among students.

A defining moment in his personal growth came from the encouragement of Dr. Mukul Ma’am. “Everything changed after I met Dr. Mukul Ma’am. Her belief in my ideas, even when they existed only in my mind, reignited my innovative spirit,” he shares. With her mentorship, he turned concepts into prototypes and deepened his understanding of intellectual property, aided by guidance in initiating patent filings.

Today, Prashant’s approach is focused and structured, as he produces three to four innovative ideas and prototypes each month. Community involvement plays a critical role in his innovation process; local users often serve as the first testers of his prototypes, and their feedback is vital for refining designs. By engaging with farmers, workers, and students, he identifies gaps in needs that technical testing might overlook. “Community feedback keeps my work grounded in real needs rather than assumptions,” he explains.

By observing the practical use of prototypes and co-creating solutions with users, Prashant ensures his innovations are comfortable, durable, affordable, and socially accepted. Looking ahead, he envisions developing people-centric, sustainable solutions that tackle everyday problems at the grassroots level. He aims to harmonize traditional knowledge with modern design while promoting environmental responsibility and the efficient use of resources.

Beyond merely creating products, Prashant wishes to cultivate an ecosystem where young innovators, particularly from rural and semi-urban backgrounds, receive encouragement, mentorship, and empowerment to tackle local challenges through education and community engagement. His advice to students and budding innovators is straightforward but impactful: “Don’t wait for the perfect moment or perfect resources. Every meaningful innovation starts with a small step, a simple question, or even a failed attempt. Believe in your curiosity, learn from your mistakes, seek guidance, and begin with what you have. Innovation is for anyone willing to take that courageous first step.”
