Transition to Cashless Toll Plazas: Entry via FASTag and UPI from April 1

India is making a significant shift towards a fully digital toll payment system, effective April 1. All toll plazas across the country will transition to cashless transactions, requiring drivers to pay toll fees solely through FASTag or UPI payment methods.

The decision, announced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, aims to reduce long wait times at toll plazas and streamline transportation. While no official notification has been issued yet, the ministry is working to implement this change smoothly without causing any pressure on drivers.

Eliminating cash transactions is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and make highway travel more comfortable. As the deadline approaches, travelers are being urged to activate their FASTag accounts or prepare their smartphones for UPI payments to avoid any issues in the future.

This transition marks the first step towards a Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system, which will utilize advanced technology to allow vehicles to pass toll areas at highway speeds without stopping or facing physical barriers.

A “no-stop tolling” system has been developed with international-level technology, currently being tested as a pilot project at 25 toll plazas across India. If successful, this system could completely eliminate the need to stop at toll plazas in the future, resulting in faster and more efficient highway travel.

Travelers are advised to check their FASTag accounts immediately to ensure they are active and have sufficient balance. If a FASTag is not being used, it is crucial to ensure that the smartphone is fully prepared for UPI payments. This will help avoid delays, penalties, or fines at toll plazas.
