BJP workers in Navi Mumbai celebrated their party’s victory in the recent Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections on January 16, 2026. The jubilant atmosphere was marked by events in Kopar Khairane as supporters rallied behind their winning candidates.

In the wake of this electoral success, the Maharashtra Cabinet announced significant decisions on January 17, extending toll relief for electric vehicles at Atal Setu for an additional year. This measure aims to further promote the use of electric vehicles in the state, reflecting the government’s commitment to sustainable transport solutions. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis chaired the cabinet meeting, where infrastructure and urban transport initiatives were at the forefront of discussions.

Among various projects addressed, the cabinet approved the revised budget for the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-2), designed to enhance suburban rail connectivity and urban mobility in the region. Additionally, a waiver on the premium for a plot in Ulwe was granted to the Tirupati Devasthanam, facilitating the construction of the Padmavati Devi temple.

In a move to optimize workforce management, the cabinet authorized the restructuring of 1,901 positions within the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, which will now be renamed as the Commissionerate of Economics and Statistics. Adjustments to staffing structures for district planning committees, special development projects, and divisional commissioner offices were also ratified.

The outcomes of the Maharashtra municipal elections are viewed as early indicators for the political landscape leading up to the 2029 elections, underscoring the strategic significance of these local results.

Commuters in Maharashtra received good news with the extension of toll concessions on the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Shivdi-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu for one more year. This decision aims to alleviate the financial burden on residents while encouraging the adoption of eco-friendly travel alternatives.

In line with its environmental efforts, the state government, under the PM e-Drive scheme, greenlit the purchase of 1,000 electric buses for Pune. Financial transactions for these buses will be streamlined via direct payment mechanisms from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations, ensuring transparency and efficiency in procurement processes.

To bolster agricultural exports, a multi-modal hub and terminal market for fruits and vegetables will be established at Bapgaon in Thane district. The project will utilize approximately 7.96 hectares of land to develop essential facilities such as cold storage, packaging, and irradiation systems, thereby enhancing the agricultural supply chain.

The cabinet also approved a substantial ₹4,775 crore investment for the Bembla river project in Yavatmal district, which is set to irrigate 52,423 hectares across five talukas. The rehabilitation of Dhamak village in Amravati district was another significant issue addressed.

In a strategic housing initiative, the Mumbai Police Housing Township project was approved, promising the construction of 45,000 homes for police personnel in the city and its suburbs. Additionally, the establishment of the Maharashtra Agency for Holistic International Mobility and Advancements (MAHIMA) illustrates a commitment to empowering skilled youth with overseas job opportunities, supported by coordinated training and placement services.

Finally, a land parcel in Panvel (West) will be allocated to the Annasaheb Patil Backward Class Development Corporation, aimed at constructing its headquarters and a multi-purpose building. These initiatives underscore the Maharashtra government’s focus on infrastructure development, economic growth, and community empowerment as it forges ahead in the aftermath of local elections.
