Is 2026 the Year to Invest in a Folding Phone? Discover Now!

What if you could fit a 10-inch tablet in your pocket just like your smartphone? This is becoming a reality, thanks to Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold, unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Featuring a 10-inch inner display, this innovative folding smartphone is set to redefine mobile technology. While Huawei launched a tri-fold phone in China in 2024, Samsung’s model will be the first of its kind available in the United States.

Although an official release date for the U.S. market hasn’t been announced, Samsung indicated that it will likely arrive in the first quarter of 2026. Currently, the device is available in South Korea, where Samsung is headquartered.

Folding phones have made significant strides since their introduction nearly a decade ago. Today’s models are thinner and can take on various shapes, approaching the durability of traditional smartphones. Nonetheless, they still represent a small portion of the smartphone market, making up only 1.5% in 2024, according to the research firm TrendForce.

Several factors hinder the widespread adoption of folding phones, as noted by Northeastern University professor Ravinder Dahiya, a researcher in flexible electronics. The high price, which can reach thousands of dollars, combined with ongoing questions about long-term durability and limited practical applications, keeps many consumers at bay. Dahiya remarked, “They are more about convenience than usefulness because they carry the same function as an iPad.”

The advancement of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology has been pivotal for manufacturers. Dahiya highlighted that over the past ten years, companies have improved their understanding of materials and manufacturing processes. This includes enhancements to the adhesives that keep the devices intact during bending, as well as overall design architecture to increase durability.

Despite these improvements, building foldable phones remains more complex than creating standard flat models. This complexity contributes to their higher costs, and they might never match the durability of traditional smartphones, Dahiya warns. The need for advanced display technology, rigorous durability testing, and features like scratch and water resistance adds to production costs.

While Samsung has not yet disclosed the price of the Galaxy Z TriFold in the U.S., it retails for approximately $2,428 in South Korea. In contrast, a conventional Samsung Galaxy S25 costs about $780. Given these high entry costs, Dahiya believes that foldable phones will likely continue to appeal mainly to tech enthusiasts for the foreseeable future.

Looking ahead, truly bendable electronics that could wrap around the body could unlock more practical use cases. This technology is still largely in the research phase, but Dahiya speculates on the potential of a flexible screen that could wrap around a wrist, serving as a smartwatch. “Unlike trifolds, which are primarily about convenience, true bendability would offer significant advantages,” he explained. “It is much easier to carry your phone when you are wearing it than putting it in your pocket.”
