Alarm as Four Stork Carcasses Discovered in Guwahati Within Two Months
The carcasses of four Lesser Adjutant Storks have been discovered near their nesting sites over the past two months in the Loharghat range of the Kamrup West forest division in Guwahati. This species is classified as ‘near threatened’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Forest department officials reported that the four birds were found at different times. The first carcass was discovered in December, followed by another recovery about 15 days ago. Most recently, two carcasses were found last Saturday in the areas of Maniyari Tiniali and Khatiamari, which are known nesting sites for the birds.
Nayan Jyoti Das, the range officer, indicated that the carcasses were retrieved from two separate locations. He speculated that the deaths might have resulted from extreme cold conditions or from the birds falling from their nests while trying to take their first flight.
