Assam’s Groundbreaking MoU with Bharatiya Beej Sahakari Samiti to Enhance Seed Access
The Assam State Cooperative Federation and the Bharatiya Beej Sahakari Samiti Limited (BBSSL) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing the availability of quality agricultural inputs and bolstering the cooperative movement in Assam. This partnership marks Assam as the 14th state to collaborate formally with BBSSL.
The MoU seeks to create a comprehensive framework led by cooperatives for the production, procurement, and distribution of high-quality seeds throughout the state. The primary goal is to boost agricultural productivity and provide better income opportunities for farmers and cooperative entities.
According to the official statement, this collaboration will allow farmers in Assam to access certified, high-quality seeds at affordable prices, addressing a persistent shortage in seed availability. By implementing coordinated planning, offering technical support, and devising structured distribution methods, the MoU aims to strengthen the seed supply chain and guarantee the timely availability of improved planting materials across Assam’s various agro-climatic regions.
A significant aspect of the partnership will focus on empowering grassroots cooperative institutions and farmers, thus reinforcing their roles in the agricultural value chain. The agreement exemplifies the principle of “cooperation among cooperatives,” where national and state-level cooperative organizations collaborate closely to achieve shared developmental goals and promote sustainable agricultural growth in Assam.
