Assam: India’s Top State in Fiscal Management, Certified by RBI
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma delivered a robust defense of his government’s fiscal management on January 12, countering allegations from the Congress party. He asserted that Assam is not only the best fiscally managed state in India but also the fastest-growing, a claim he stated is backed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
In response to critiques regarding Assam’s borrowing and financial health, Sarma emphasized that it is the Congress that should reflect on its own record with loans, particularly citing the Congress-led Karnataka government’s unprecedented borrowing of Rs 92,000 crore, which he labeled a “new record” in public debt.
The Chief Minister defended Assam’s financial discipline, noting that the state’s borrowings remain well within acceptable limits and comply fully with fiscal regulations. He questioned the basis of the ongoing allegations against Assam, arguing that no discrepancies could exist if the RBI had formally endorsed the state’s financial status.
Sarma posed a rhetorical question: “If we had done something wrong, would the Reserve Bank of India have given us a certificate?” He maintained that Assam’s financial qualifications have been rigorously examined by the nation’s central banking authority.
He also criticized certain media narratives, contrasting them with the RBI’s assessment. The RBI has ranked Assam at the top nationwide for financial growth and development, while some media reports suggested the state was lagging behind.
Sarma invited the public to decide whether to trust the Reserve Bank of India or the narratives propagated by certain media outlets that question Assam’s fiscal soundness. He reiterated that official data and authoritative validations substantiate the state government’s claims of effective financial governance.
