Owaisi Slams Assam CM Sarma Over Controversial Hindu PM Remarks
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi launched a vigorous criticism of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 11, accusing him of lacking understanding of the Constitution and making statements that undermine its essence. Owaisi’s remarks came in response to Sarma’s comments regarding Owaisi’s assertion that a hijab-clad woman could one day become India’s Prime Minister. Sarma responded by acknowledging that while this is constitutionally possible, he believes that due to India’s identity as a Hindu nation, the Prime Minister will always be a Hindu.
Addressing the media, Owaisi emphasized that Sarma, having sworn an oath to the Constitution, should clarify where such religious qualifications for the Prime Minister’s role are specified. He contrasted this with Pakistan, pointing out that its Constitution limits high constitutional positions to individuals of specific religions, unlike India.
“Babasaheb Ambedkar provided us with a Constitution that permits any citizen of India to aspire to the roles of Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or mayor,” Owaisi remarked, asserting that India belongs to individuals of all faiths, including those who do not subscribe to any religion. He further criticized Sarma’s statements, suggesting they reflect a limited perspective and a failure to adhere to the constitutional principles of equality and inclusivity.
Earlier, Sarma had stated to the media, “There is no constitutional barrier. Anyone can become Prime Minister. However, India is a Hindu nation and civilization, and we strongly believe that the Indian Prime Minister will always be a Hindu person.” Owaisi, speaking at an election rally in Solapur, Maharashtra on January 9, reiterated that the Indian Constitution enables individuals from all religious backgrounds to aspire to high office, unlike the constraints found in Pakistan’s Constitution, expressing hope that a hijab-clad woman will one day hold the office of Prime Minister, which he views as a testament to India’s constitutional inclusivity.
