Desperate Journey: Chinese Woman Arrested Trying to Sneak into India via Nepal Border Without Visa
A woman, believed to be a Chinese national, was apprehended on Friday after attempting to cross into India without valid visa and passport documents at the Indo-Nepal border in Maharajganj district, Uttar Pradesh. Security officials reported that the woman was spotted around 1 PM while using a footpath at Bairia Bazaar in the Nautanwa area.
During a routine inspection, personnel from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) detained her upon discovering the absence of required travel documentation. A senior official confirmed that she was later handed over to police, where she was formally arrested. Nautanwa Station House Officer Purushottam Rao identified her as Huajia Jie based on a slip found in her possession. Rao noted that investigations are underway to ascertain her city of origin and purpose for visiting India, although language barriers have hindered the collection of detailed information.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of concern regarding unauthorized entries along the India-Nepal border. In November of last year, another Chinese national, Liu Kunjing, aged 49, was arrested near the border in the Bahraich district. Kunjing was apprehended while filming SSB facilities near Border Pillar 651/07, just 60 meters inside Indian territory. His passport, which included visas for Pakistan, Nepal, and Vietnam, raised security concerns due to his extensive travel history. Authorities confiscated three mobile phones and a translation device, along with a map of Nepal that marked sensitive border points.
During preliminary questioning, Kunjing claimed he was traveling to Delhi for furniture business via unauthorized routes from Nepalgunj and Rupaidiha. Lacking an Indian visa, he had illegally entered Indian territory. His electronic data was shared with surveillance and cyber experts for further analysis. Following his arrest, the SSB informed national agencies, including the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). He was charged under Section 21 of the Foreigners and Immigration Act, 2025, and subsequently placed in 14-day judicial custody in Bahraich jail.
This pattern of illegal entry is troubling, as evidenced by the December sentencing of another Chinese national, Peng Minhui, who received a one-year prison term for similar offenses. Peng, originally from Hunan Province, was caught entering India from Nepal on January 14. During interrogation, he admitted to crossing the border without a valid visa after visiting Nepal. Police filed a case against him under The Foreigners Act, leading to a conviction based on the evidence presented in court.
These incidents highlight ongoing security challenges at the Indo-Nepal border, prompting authorities to enhance surveillance and enforcement measures. The situation underscores the need for vigilant border control and strict adherence to immigration laws to prevent unauthorized entries, which pose potential security risks for the region.
