Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently unveiled the company’s new line of smart glasses, the Meta Ray-Ban Display, during the Meta Connect event at the company’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California. On September 15, 2025, Meta announced agreements with three nuclear energy providers-Vistra, TerraPower, and Oklo-marking a critical step in securing sustainable energy for its Prometheus supercluster computing system. This data center, located in New Albany, Ohio, is a cornerstone of Meta’s strategy to enhance artificial intelligence capabilities. Although financial details were not disclosed, shares of Vistra and Oklo surged by 15% and 17% respectively following the announcement, while Meta’s stock remained stable.
Zuckerberg introduced Prometheus in July, labeling it an essential component for advancing Meta’s AI endeavors, which are expected to come to fruition in 2026. The collaborations with these nuclear companies aim to generate an impressive 6.6 gigawatts of power by 2035, exceeding New Hampshire’s total energy demand.
Joel Kaplan, Meta’s policy chief, emphasized the importance of state-of-the-art data centers and AI infrastructure in maintaining America’s leadership in global AI. He noted that the partnerships would help fund Vistra’s existing nuclear plants in Ohio and Pennsylvania, extending their operational lifespan and boosting energy production. The other two projects by TerraPower and Oklo remain in development but represent significant future potential.
These agreements are part of a broader trend among major tech companies, including Amazon and Google, which are exploring nuclear energy to power their AI infrastructure. In March, Meta joined these companies in a pledge to triple global nuclear energy production by 2050. Additionally, in June, Meta secured a 20-year agreement to purchase nuclear energy from Constellation Energy, set to commence in 2027.
The partnership with TerraPower includes funding for two nuclear projects anticipated to start generating power as early as 2032, with Meta potentially acquiring additional energy from up to six other projects by 2035. Oklo, whose advanced nuclear technology campus is slated to be operational by 2030 in Pike County, Ohio, also has significant backing from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who holds a 4.3% stake valued at approximately $650 million.
These initiatives underscore Meta’s dedication to sustainable energy solutions as it advances toward Zuckerberg’s long-term goal of achieving superintelligence-AI that significantly surpasses human capabilities. The latest agreements are expected to create thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of permanent operational roles, further contributing to economic growth while supporting technological innovation.
