Israel Strikes Multiple Lebanese Sites Ahead of Crucial Peace Talks
Israel conducted airstrikes across southern and eastern Lebanon on January 6, targeting several locations, including the coastal city of Sidon, where a three-story commercial building was destroyed. These military actions occurred just days before the Lebanese army commander is set to report to the government on the disarmament of Hezbollah along the Israeli border. Israeli officials stated that the strikes aimed at weapons storage facilities and infrastructure utilized by Hezbollah and Hamas, some of which were reported to be located in civilian areas. While there were no fatalities in Sidon, one individual was hospitalized.
Further strikes were reported in villages throughout the Bekaa Valley and southern Lebanon, including a targeting of the residence of a deceased Hamas commander. Earlier on the same day, a drone strike in Braikeh injured two individuals, also targeting members of Hezbollah. In response to the strikes, Lebanon’s president condemned the actions, labeling them counterproductive to international efforts aimed at deescalating tensions and asserting government authority over areas controlled by Hezbollah.
Since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire in November 2024 which ended a year-long conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, there have been near-daily airstrikes by Israel, which argues that Lebanon has not met commitments to disarm militant groups. The Lebanese government aims to eradicate armed groups from the south Litani region by the end of 2025. The recent airstrikes follow a broader conflict that ignited in October 2023, following an attack by Hamas on southern Israel, which prompted Hezbollah to launch rockets in support, leading to significant casualties and political instability in Lebanon.
