US Venezuela Operation Sparks Outrage: Congress and Left Demand Action
Opposition parties in India, including Congress, have strongly condemned the recent military operation by the United States that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. Over the weekend, five leftist organizations called for nationwide protests, denouncing what they termed “US aggression” against the Latin American nation.
Jairam Ramesh, Congress’s general secretary and communications in-charge, expressed profound concern about US actions regarding Venezuela, stating, “The INC expresses very grave concern on US actions relating to Venezuela in the past 24 hours. Settled principles of international law cannot be violated unilaterally.”
In a joint statement, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India, the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, the All India Forward Bloc, and the Revolutionary Socialist Party condemned the US for its military actions and labeled Maduro’s kidnapping as a violation of a nation’s sovereignty and “a blatant violation of the UN Charter.”
They drew attention to remarks made by US President Donald Trump, who indicated intentions to seize Venezuela’s oil reserves, revealing the underlying motives of US aggression. Secretary of State Marco Rubio further escalated tensions by warning that Cuba and Mexico could be next.
These statements came just days after the US released its National Security Strategy 2025, asserting that “US imperialism seeks to impose its hegemony over the entire world,” even if it entails military engagement, according to the leftist parties.
They argued that the US is attempting to enforce the Trump corollary of the controversial Monroe Doctrine, which considers the entire Western Hemisphere as its domain, and has called for solidarity from the Indian government.
In light of reports suggesting mass mobilization in Venezuela against US actions and in defense of national sovereignty, the leftist groups urged support for these protests, appealing for increased participation in India. They called on the NDA-led government to raise its voice in opposition to the US and support the Venezuelan people.
“We appeal to all peace-loving, anti-imperialist citizens of our country to mobilize in large numbers and actively engage in these protests. The Government of India must align with global voices condemning US aggression and unequivocally support Venezuela,” they stated.
