Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized the importance of fostering a sustained reading habit among youth during his address at the Assam Book Fair on January 2. He highlighted that literature remains essential for intellectual growth, even in an age dominated by evolving media consumption.

Sonowal remarked that books “illuminate minds, cleanse thought, and enrich society across generations,” positioning literature as a vital reflection of a society’s conscience and creativity. He noted that the body of literature serves as a mirror to the imagination of a community, playing a crucial role in the intellectual progression of a nation.

Calling book fairs “pilgrimage sites of knowledge,” Sonowal asserted that initiatives promoting reading significantly contribute to societal intellectual advancement. He urged the younger generation to embrace reading more, stating, “Every step taken to promote reading is a firm step toward the intellectual advancement of a people.”

The minister also observed a robust turnout at the fair, describing it as a positive sign. He compared books to gifts that can be revisited multiple times, each offering new insights and perspectives. Sonowal acknowledged the rich legacy of Assamese cultural and literary figures who have shaped the region’s identity through their contributions.

Addressing the dangers of substituting deep reading with brief digital content, he warned, “No matter how much we consume social media feed, it is only books which can complete us. Only reading can give depth, imagination, and critical thought.”

While he recognized that technology has influenced reading behaviors, Sonowal underscored the potential of digital formats like e-books, audiobooks, and online libraries to enhance accessibility. He urged the modernization of libraries, particularly in smaller towns, and advocated for presenting Assamese literature in contemporary formats to attract new readers.
