Heartwarming Rescue: Six Puppies Saved from Illegal Dog Meat Trade in Assam
Six puppies, just a few months old, were rescued in Jorhat, Assam, after being discovered tied with wires and ropes in an empty lot at Lichubari. This situation raised suspicions that they were being transported for the illegal dog meat trade. The rescue operation was conducted by local volunteers in collaboration with the Lichubari police, supported by Humane World for Animals India and local animal welfare organizations Anaajoree and Daryai Ghoda. Acting on tips from vigilant residents, the team intervened just in time to prevent the puppies from being taken out of the area.
After their rescue, the puppies were taken to a shelter run by Daryai Ghoda, where they are receiving veterinary treatment and care. Efforts are underway to rehabilitate the puppies and find them safe, loving homes once they recover.
Animal welfare organizations have recently raised concerns about an increase in the theft and illegal transportation of community dogs in Assam. Advocates in North Lakhimpur reported multiple cases of community dogs disappearing, raising alarms about potential organized smuggling linked to the dog meat trade. Despite the fact that this trade is illegal in India, it appears to persist in some parts of the Northeast, with reports of dogs being transported to neighboring states such as Mizoram and Nagaland.
Tilottama Mozumdar, a volunteer involved in the rescue, emphasized the importance of citizen vigilance to prevent such crimes. She alleged that dogs are often captured, bound with wires, muzzled, and cruelly transported by road and rail under inhumane conditions.
Mishi Aggarwal, a Cruelty Response Specialist at Humane World for Animals India, remarked that the rescue underscored the need for community awareness and prompt coordination with local authorities. She noted that timely reporting by citizens can help disrupt such illegal activities and save animal lives.
Milin Dutta, founder of Anaajoree, described the puppies’ condition as distressing and called for stronger enforcement and collaboration to combat the illegal trade and protect community dogs in Assam.
Humane World for Animals India continues to work with local partners and authorities throughout the region to fight against the dog meat trade through rescue efforts, awareness campaigns, and humane dog population management programs.
