China Unleashes Massive War Games Near Taiwan: Trump’s Confidence Amidst Rising Tensions After $11.1 Billion U.S. Arms Deal
China has undertaken its largest military exercises around Taiwan this week, deemed as “biggest war games” in recent history. The drills, called “Justice Mission 2025,” commenced with 10 hours of live-fire activities on Tuesday, marking the second day of intensified military maneuvers near the island, according to Reuters.
The initiation of these military drills correlates with China’s condemnation of Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which Beijing accuses of pushing a separatist agenda. The People’s Liberation Army’s drills are described as “punitive and deterrent actions” directed at those advocating for Taiwan’s independence. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson emphasized that these exercises are essential for safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity. In line with this, Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, stated that the pursuit of independence by Taiwan is “incompatible with peace across the Strait.”
Significantly, the drills began just 11 days after the U.S. announced an unprecedented $11.1 billion arms package to Taiwan. China’s foreign affairs ministry reacted strongly, characterizing Taiwan’s military procurement as provocations that expose the island’s true nature as “war-mongers.” The ministry refrained from directly naming the United States but warned that any efforts to arm Taiwan for the purpose of containing China would only empower separatist forces and increase the risk of military conflict in the Taiwan Strait. Zhang Xiaogang reiterated that Taiwan’s reliance on external forces for independence is futile and that military resistance to reunification is a “dead end.”
China firmly states that the issue of Taiwan is at the core of its national interests and has asserted that any provocative actions will meet with a determined response. The ministry highlighted that all attempts to obstruct China’s reunification efforts would ultimately fail.
In the United States, former President Donald Trump seemed to downplay the tensions surrounding China’s military activities. During a press conference, while he acknowledged the ongoing drills, he remarked, “I have a great relationship with President Xi, and he hasn’t told me anything about it.” Trump added, “They’ve been doing naval exercises for 20 years in that area – now people take it a little bit differently,” indicating a belief that the situation is being exaggerated.
The backdrop of these military drills lies in China’s long-standing claim over Taiwan, a democratically governed island that Beijing regards as part of its territory. Over the past five years, China has applied increased military pressure on Taiwan, which has consistently rejected these claims. The Taiwanese government maintains that its future should be determined solely by its people, who elect their own leaders. Notably, Taiwan enjoys a status of de facto independence, despite limited international recognition.
Taiwan remains firm in its assertion that the Republic of China is a sovereign state. The People’s Republic of China, under which Taiwan is claimed, has never had authority over the island. In its pursuit of reunification, China has not ruled out the use of military force, heightening fears that an attack could spark a wider conflict in the region. Beijing has proposed a “one country, two systems” framework for Taiwan, similar to that of Hong Kong, but such an arrangement lacks support among major political factions on the island.
