Your arm begins to tire, fingers negotiating with gravity as the crowd pushes in, oblivious to your internal struggle. Fatigue settles in. Doubt creeps into your mind, tempting you to think thoughts you shouldn’t consider. Perhaps letting go wouldn’t be so terrible; the road below the Khar subway seems oddly serene, almost inviting.
Just as this precarious thought takes hold, a sturdy arm appears from nowhere. A stranger, without any introduction or grand philosophy, grips you with a steady resolve, holding on until the next station. You don’t even know this person’s name, yet you recognize that you’re safe because they chose to hold you when you couldn’t maintain your grip.
I’ve often reflected on how this experience mirrors the way God presents Himself in the Bible. Time and again, He assures us, “I will hold you.” Not just offering bits of advice or shouting instructions from afar-He intends to hold us.
Isaiah captures this sentiment, writing, “Fear not, for I am with you. Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; yes, I will help you. I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” This isn’t just poetic language meant for decorative framing; it’s profoundly relatable. When your grip falters, His remains steadfast.
The Psalmist echoes this, saying, “When I said, My foot is slipping, Your mercy, O Lord, held me up.” This happens not after we’ve stumbled, nor once we’ve learned our lessons, but precisely when our fingers begin to loosen their hold.
Even Peter experienced this reality. One moment he walked confidently on water; the next, he sank under fear and doubt. He didn’t engage in a lengthy prayer; he simply cried out, “Lord, save me.” The Bible states, “Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him.” No lengthy sermon-just a firm grasp.
Many of us live our lives clinging for dear life-grasping onto control, plans, and pride-while our arms ache, our confidence wanes, and our fears mount. We often misconstrue faith as needing to hold on tighter, but perhaps true faith lies in letting go.
So, let go of that desperate grip and allow God to take control today. The crowds will still be present, and the noise won’t fade away. Life may still feel cramped and uncomfortable. However, what a soothing journey it transforms into when you feel God’s grip around you.
