Coimbatore Corporation Launches Essential Culvert and Drinking Water Pipeline Works at Lanka Corner: A Lifeline for Our Community!
Excavation work is currently underway at the Lanka Corner junction in Coimbatore as part of a significant initiative to enhance local infrastructure. The Coimbatore Corporation has embarked on this dual project to lay pipelines as part of a 24/7 drinking water scheme and to install a much-needed box culvert aimed at improving stormwater drainage in the area.
The simultaneous execution of these tasks is designed to minimize disruption and avoid repeated excavation at the junction. Specifically, the drinking water project involves connecting a feeder main from Trichy Road, located in front of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, to another line extending from State Bank Road. Approximately 70 meters of pipeline will be installed to facilitate this crucial connection.
In addition to the pipeline work, precast box culverts are being installed due to the inadequacy of the existing stormwater drain at the junction. A senior official from the Coimbatore Corporation explained that stormwater runoff from regions such as North Coimbatore, Uppilipalayam, and the Race Course area converges at this junction. During heavy rainfall, this causes overflows that ultimately drain into Valankulam, highlighting the pressing need for infrastructure upgrades. The planned installation of precast box culverts will cover a total length of 45 meters, with excavation work currently ongoing over a 10-meter stretch and the remainder addressed in phases.
Despite the necessity of these improvements, the work is proving to be challenging. The intersection of the box culvert with the feeder main adds complexity, further complicated by the lack of detailed records regarding underground utilities in the area. Multiple cables traverse the zone, necessitating a cautious approach to the excavation effort.
To ensure public safety and facilitate the construction process, traffic restrictions have been implemented at the Lanka Corner junction. As a result, vehicles are currently prohibited from entering the area from State Bank Road. The Corporation anticipates that this phase of the project will be completed within a week, signaling a significant advancement in the infrastructure capabilities of this busy junction.
As Coimbatore continues to grow, such projects will be vital in not only improving drinking water supply resilience but also in addressing stormwater management challenges. This proactive approach by the Coimbatore Corporation underscores the commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and maintaining public safety during construction periods.
