Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the bravery of the Sahibzadas, the sons of the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, during a ceremony in New Delhi on Friday. He highlighted their ultimate sacrifice as a testament to India’s unwavering courage against the oppressive Mughal regime, countering religious extremism and terror. Modi expressed that the story of the Sahibzadas should resonate with every citizen, lamenting that even post-independence, a “slave mentality” has persisted in society. He noted that there have been efforts over the decades to suppress such historical truths.
Modi emphasized India’s commitment to breaking free from this colonial mindset, which he traced back to the influence of British politician Thomas Babington Macaulay in 1835. He underscored that India’s rich linguistic diversity is emerging as a source of strength in this liberation process. The PM assured that in ten years, the nation would be entirely rid of the “mentality of slavery.”
Speaking at Bharat Mandapam during the annual observance of ‘Veer Bal Diwas,’ which honors the martyrdom of Sahibzadas Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh, Modi remarked that the valor and ideals of figures like Mata Gujri and Guru Gobind Singh continue to inspire Indians today. He reflected on the courage shown by Sahibzada Ajit Singh, Sahibzada Jujhar Singh, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh, and Sahibzada Fateh Singh at such a young age, facing formidable adversities.
The PM noted that Aurangzeb’s cruelty disregarded their youth as he sought to intimidate Indians into conversion by breaking their spirits. However, none of the four Sahibzadas faltered in their resolve. Modi also assured that the memories of such sacrifices would no longer remain buried, and the nation’s heroes would not be marginalized any longer.
Addressing the younger generation present at the event, Modi said that Gen Z and Gen Alpha would play pivotal roles in steering India towards a “Viksit Bharat,” or developed India.
