MBA Student from Tripura Dies After Dehradun Knife Attack: Shocking Incident
A 24-year-old Chakma student from Tripura, Angel Chakma, has tragically succumbed to his injuries after more than two weeks following a brutal knife attack in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. This incident has ignited widespread outrage and heightened concerns regarding the safety of students from the Northeast in various parts of India.
Angel, an MBA student, was allegedly attacked along with his brother on December 9. This violence erupted when the brothers protested against racial slurs directed at them. Michael Chakma, Angel’s younger brother, reported that the assailants, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, harassed them based on their appearance, using derogatory terms like “Nepali,” “Chinese,” “Chinki,” and “momos.”
The attack escalated when the assailants stabbed Angel multiple times, leaving him critically injured. He was immediately transported to Graphic Era Hospital in Dehradun, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Despite ongoing medical treatment, his condition worsened, and he passed away in the early hours of December 26.
So far, authorities have arrested five individuals linked to the case: Avinash Negi, Shaurya Rajput, Suraj Khawas, Ayush Badoni, and Sumit. Investigations are ongoing, with efforts focused on locating the prime suspect involved in the attack.
Family sources noted that Angel Chakma resided in Debrampara, Agartala, and originally hails from Pecharthal in the North Tripura district, where his extended family still resides. His remains will be transported back to Agartala and then to Debrampara and Pecharthal for the final rites. Family members shared that Angel’s father is a Border Security Force constable stationed in Manipur. They are demanding stringent punishment for those responsible, emphasizing that justice should not be delayed.
Political leaders and student organizations have vocally condemned the killing. Pradyot Debbarma, founder of Tipra Motha and a member of the royal family, expressed his sorrow on social media, lamenting that while many celebrated Christmas, the Chakma community lost a beloved member. He highlighted that although Angel is no longer with us, his assailants remain unconvicted, and justice must be pursued.
Chakma student organizations have labeled this incident a significant failure of law and order and are calling for a transparent, swift investigation. They voiced concern that although five individuals have been arrested, the main perpetrator is still reportedly at large.
