Tragic Loss: Trekker Dies on Goechala Trail in West Sikkim
A trekker identified as Suraj Kumar Tiwari, 45, from Uttar Pradesh, tragically passed away while descending the Goechala trekking route in West Sikkim on Thursday night. The incident occurred near the Phedang campsite, located approximately 22 kilometers from Yuksam. Tiwari was participating in an eight-day trekking expedition through the Khangchendzonga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, when he fell ill during the return journey on Thursday morning.
Fellow trekkers reported that Tiwari had successfully completed the trek the previous day. However, at around 9 am near the Kokchurong campsite, he suddenly showed symptoms akin to paralysis. His co-trekkers and the trekking guide quickly administered first aid and sought assistance from nearby camps. Local trekkers and residents rushed to help, carrying him downhill towards Yuksam. Unfortunately, despite extensive rescue efforts, Tiwari died around 8 am near the Phedang campsite.
Preliminary evaluations suggest that low blood pressure may have contributed to his death. Fellow trekkers confirmed that Tiwari had no prior health conditions. The medical officer at Gyalshing District Hospital pronounced him dead on Friday morning. After a post-mortem examination, his body was returned to his guardian following standard formalities. Tiwari is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
This incident marks the third fatality on the Goechala trekking trail. Earlier, a trekker from Kolkata succumbed to Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) along the same route, while another local resident from Geyzing also died due to AMS-related complications. In response to the recurring tragedies, local tourism stakeholders in Yuksam have urged the relevant authorities and the state government to enhance medical facilities, emergency response systems, and rescue infrastructure along the Dzongri-Goechala trekking corridor.
