Tragic Turn: Gangtok Teen’s Death Investigated as Murder; Suspect Arrested
The death of a 17-year-old boy in Gangtok has escalated into a murder investigation, with police formally charging one individual in connection with the case. The minor was taken to Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial (STNM) Hospital last week, suffering from severe injuries after reportedly falling from an under-construction building in Upper Burtuk. Unfortunately, he was declared dead upon arrival.
Authorities opened a murder case under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, against a 21-year-old named Sangay Limboo on December 22, following new evidence discovered during an investigation into what was initially classified as an unnatural death. Prior to this, an unnatural death case was registered on December 19 shortly after the boy’s fatal incident. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Pradeep Rai of the Sadar Police Station was assigned to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the case, which soon indicated that the death was likely not accidental.
As the findings unfolded, investigators learned that the 17-year-old, a Gangtok resident, was living with his girlfriend in a rented room and worked at Maple Night Club in the Lal Bazar area. On the night of December 18, after finishing his shift, he reportedly spotted his girlfriend conversing with Limboo near their residence, close to the construction site.
Suspecting an inappropriate relationship, the boy confronted both Limboo and his girlfriend and called friends for support. Tensions rose, leading to a heated argument that escalated into physical violence. During the altercation, the minor allegedly punched Limboo, who then pushed him, causing the boy to fall from the first floor of the unfinished structure.
The fall left him gravely injured, and he reportedly lost consciousness at the scene. Witness accounts indicated that initially, his friends fled the area, while Limboo, along with another individual known as Pem Cheki Lepcha, approached the injured boy. Limboo later left the scene, according to police reports.
After a brief period, the boy’s friends returned with others and called a taxi to transport him to STNM Hospital, where he was declared dead shortly after arrival. The incident prompted a detailed investigation by the Sadar Police Station. Following the accumulation of evidence, authorities shifted the case from unnatural death to homicide.
On December 23, Sangay Limboo, a resident of Tingmoo in the Namchi district, who was currently residing in Lower Sichey, was arrested and has been named the primary suspect in this troubling case.
