Calm Returns to West Karbi Anglong After Violence; Swift Action on Illegal Immigration
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on December 24 that the situation in West Karbi Anglong, which experienced violence earlier, has significantly improved. After two days of unrest that resulted in two fatalities, normalcy is gradually returning.
Sarma stated in a media briefing that dialogue between Karbi and non-tribal groups has commenced. Senior government officials remain present in the troubled areas to oversee the situation. He reported that markets have reopened and people are once again taking to the streets. “Today’s situation is absolutely normal. People are visiting shops and moving about freely. We anticipate further improvements in the days ahead,” he said.
The Chief Minister confirmed two deaths linked to the violence on December 23. One victim died during clashes between protesters and security forces, while the other, a person with a disability, was allegedly trapped in their home and succumbing to flames when agitators set fire to buildings. Sarma described this incident as “very pathetic” and noted that several others suffered minor injuries.
The unrest began as protests over alleged encroachments on Professional Grazing Reserve and Village Grazing Reserve lands in Karbi Anglong, leading to instances of arson and widespread disturbances in Kheroni and surrounding areas. In response, authorities imposed prohibitory orders, suspended mobile internet services, and deployed additional police and central forces to restore order.
In addition, Sarma announced that the state government has started implementing provisions of the Illegal Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, as previously promised. He instructed deputy commissioners statewide to issue immediate expulsion orders for individuals designated as foreigners by Foreigners’ Tribunals or those deemed suspicious. “The police or the BSF will take necessary action to send them back to Bangladesh,” he added, highlighting that he had provided detailed remarks on the issue in the past.
