Outrage Unleashed: Massive Protests Erupt at Hojai–Karbi Anglong Border
Protests erupted along the Hojai-Karbi Anglong border on Wednesday, December 24, following the tragic death of a young man who was allegedly burned alive during a violent incident in the Kheroni market area of West Karbi Anglong district the day before. The situation sparked widespread protests and raised security concerns in the region.
Tensions escalated in the Forest Bazaar area of Lanka as hundreds of local residents took to the streets, carrying placards and chanting slogans demanding justice for the deceased. Public anger intensified as news of the man’s death spread, causing significant disruption to daily life. Businesses closed their doors, and vehicular traffic was partially halted due to the unrest.
During the protests, demonstrators vandalized and dismantled the Ranaima Karbi Anglong Entry Tax Gate, further heightening tensions at this sensitive inter-district border. The victim has been identified as Suraj Dey, a 32-year-old specially-abled man who reportedly became trapped inside his shop when fires broke out amid clashes over demands for the eviction of non-tribal settlers from protected grazing reserves in West Karbi Anglong.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at the Kheroni market, where multiple structures were reportedly set ablaze during the unrest. Tragically, Dey was unable to escape and lost his life when his shop was set on fire.
On Wednesday, thousands from the Bengali-speaking community rallied at Forest Bazaar, a bordering area between West Karbi Anglong and Hojai districts. Protesters called for justice for Dey and sought assurances of safety for residents amid the ongoing unrest. Allegations surfaced that non-tribal establishments were targeted during the protests, further exacerbating existing community tensions.
In light of the deteriorating situation, security forces have been deployed to monitor sensitive areas, and authorities have increased surveillance to prevent further escalation. Senior police officials have urged all parties to exercise restraint and have appealed for calm.
Inspector General of Police, Vivek Raj Singh, visited the protest site, urging demonstrators to maintain peace. He assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted, promising strict action against those responsible for the incident.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death continue.
