Ledo Residents Unite: Urgent Call for Action Against Drug Traffickers

Residents of Ledo town in Tinsukia district staged a significant protest on Wednesday, demanding stringent action against drug traffickers and peddlers in the area. The demonstration, organized by the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) in collaboration with Ledo Nari Samaj and local students, raised alarm over the alleged resurgence of drug-related activities in the jurisdiction of the Margherita police station and Ledo police outpost.

Led by Kanchan Bora, vice-president of AJYCP Tinsukia district, the protest march commenced at Ledo Tiniali and journeyed through the town’s main streets. Demonstrators carried placards and banners, expressing frustration over what they perceived as police inaction in combating the drug issue.

“Previously arrested drug dealers and peddlers are openly resuming their illegal drug businesses after being released on bail. This reflects a clear failure on the part of law enforcement. The availability of drugs is undermining the future of our youth. The police are not taking effective measures to stop them,” Bora stated during the protest.

Members of Ledo Nari Samaj voiced their concerns regarding the rising number of school and college students falling victim to drug addiction. Smritilekha Baruah, a representative of the women’s group, highlighted the urgency of the situation, saying, “We see children as young as teenagers getting trapped in drug use. Parents feel helpless as traffickers operate freely. Our students and young people are succumbing to drugs due to their easy availability in our communities. This is destroying the future of our community. It’s time for law enforcement to implement strong and consistent actions.”

The protesters called for regular crackdowns, stringent monitoring of suspected drug hotspots, and expedited legal proceedings for individuals involved in the drug trade. At the conclusion of the demonstration, the group submitted a memorandum to Margherita Co-District Commissioner Rahul Doley, urging immediate intervention and enhanced accountability from law enforcement agencies.
