Celebrate Unforgettable Anniversaries in the Magical Season of Margazhi: Cherish Love, Joy, and Togetherness!
As the December Music Season unfolds, behind-the-scenes figures are celebrating significant milestones in their dedication to the arts. The Music Academy is currently hosting its 99th annual conference and concert series; however, it won’t celebrate its 100th anniversary until 2028. This discrepancy arises from the academy’s rich history, which will be further explored as we approach its true centenary.
A.R. Rahman inaugurated the 99th Annual Conference and Concerts of the Music Academy in Chennai on December 15, 2025. Meanwhile, the Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha (SPSS), the oldest surviving organization of its type, marked its own 125th anniversary this year. Notably, the SPSS may actually be older than it claims, as its parent body, the Sangita Vidwat Sabha, was founded in 1896 in Thiruvallikeni. Registered in 1900, SPSS traces its roots to that date. Interestingly, the Sangita Vidwat Sabha’s spirit lived on; it established a short-lived Musical Academy in 1926, leading to the founding of the Music Academy in 1928, which also identifies itself in the vernacular as the Sangita Vidwat Sabha. This complex lineage, highlighted in R. Rangaramanuja Iyengar’s Musings of a Musician, offers clarity regarding the present Music Academy’s status as the “third” of its kind.
Relocating from Thiruvallikeni to Mylapore, the SPSS contrasts with the Sri Tyagabrahma Gana Sabha (STGS), which remains in T. Nagar, where it celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. Founded by actor Chittoor V. Nagiah, known for his profound musical knowledge, the Sabha aimed to entertain T. Nagar’s residents. Other early members included Lady Andal Venkatasubba Rao and S. Ramaswami Naidu, who later became Mayor of Madras. Initially hosting events at the Dakshin Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, STGS acquired land from T.A. Rangachari, leading to the establishment of Vani Mahal, inaugurated by C.P. Ramaswami Iyer on November 18, 1945. Unlike many other sabhas facing financial challenges due to land leases, the STGS secured its financial future through strategic land investments.
The Narada Gana Sabha also stands out for its successful property ownership, having constructed its auditorium in the 1970s. This financial savvy has become increasingly rare in the realm of Carnatic music, with many sabhas struggling to maintain stability in a changing economic landscape.
Additionally, the Margazhi Maha Utsavam (MMU), organized by Maximum Media, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. From the outset, founders Subhasree Thanikachalam and V.K. Manimaran emphasized reaching broader audiences through cable television and later the internet, while maintaining live performances. Engaging audiences directly has helped MMU foster a significant following, despite initial skepticism from television channels. Over time, MMU has signaled a quiet revolution in the promotion of Carnatic music, paving the way for similar events nationwide.
While the pandemic saw artists experimenting with direct-to-viewer formats and casting doubt on the future of traditional sabhas, audiences are once again returning, though the impact on ticket sales remains uncertain. Many sabhas are reticent about sharing financial details, revealing the complexities they face in the post-pandemic landscape. Despite these disruptions, live performances remain irreplaceable, affirming the enduring appeal of in-person experiences in the evolving world of arts.
The December Music Season, with its blend of tradition and innovation, continues to mesmerize audiences, celebrating a rich tapestry of musical heritage in Chennai.
