Agartala, Dec 23: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has emphasized the urgent need for the effective implementation of the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP). This initiative aims to enhance multimodal corridors that connect the Northeast region with the rest of India and neighboring countries. Saha stated that “the implementation of the project to strengthen multimodal corridors linking the Northeast with the rest of the country and its neighbours will play a key role in boosting regional and international connectivity.”

These comments came during a meeting of the high-level task force on infrastructure and connectivity development in the Northeast, which took place on Monday. The virtual meeting was chaired from Delhi by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia.

Saha noted the immense development potential of the Northeast, particularly in areas related to infrastructure and communication systems. He called for coordinated efforts to tackle various challenges faced by the Northeastern states concerning road, rail, air, and inland waterway connectivity, as well as in the sectors of electricity, gas, and digital infrastructure.

Additionally, he stressed the significance of identifying priority areas for development, such as regional infrastructure macro-grids, power, oil and natural gas, tourism, and border trade. During the meeting, the Chief Minister presented a report that outlined proposed strategies for advancement in these sectors.

The KMTTP is a strategic India-Myanmar initiative designed to connect India’s Northeast to the sea through Haldia by utilizing a combination of sea, river, and road routes via Myanmar. The project links Haldia to Sittwe Port and continues to Paletwa via the Kaladan River, eventually connecting to Zorinpui in Mizoram by road, thereby circumventing the congested Siliguri Corridor. This aims to enhance regional trade and development.

Senior officials from the DoNER Ministry and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma also took part in the meeting.
