Tragic Lynching: 10 Arrested in Shocking Murder of Hindu Man in Bangladesh
Ten individuals have been arrested in connection with the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh, according to Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the interim government, on December 20. The victim, identified as Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old garment factory worker, was killed by a mob in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, over alleged blasphemy.
Of those detained, seven were apprehended by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and three by local police. Yunus stated that joint operations were conducted at various sites to capture the suspects, who range in age from 19 to 46.
Police reports indicate that Das was initially attacked by a crowd outside his workplace following accusations of blasphemy. He was subsequently hanged from a tree. His body was later discarded by the roadside along the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway and set ablaze. Authorities have since recovered the remains and sent them to the Mymensingh Medical College morgue for an autopsy.
The Interim Government of Bangladesh condemned the incident on December 19, emphasizing that such violence has no place in the country. The government asserted, “The perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared.”
This brutal act raises significant concerns regarding the safety of minority communities in Bangladesh. Reports from the Hindu community indicate a troubling increase in anti-minority incidents since the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August of the previous year.
