A young man launched a knife attack in a crowded area of Taipei, Taiwan’s capital, on Friday, December 19, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to several others. The assailant also deployed smoke grenades to instill fear and chaos among the crowd.
The incident initiated at Taipei Main Station, the city’s busiest transportation hub, during the evening rush when the station was teeming with people. After throwing a smoke bomb inside, the attacker fled to the nearby Zhongshan district, where he continued his rampage, targeting individuals on the street and inside a shopping mall.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with thick smoke engulfing the area. People ran in all directions in a desperate attempt to escape, seeking refuge in nearby shops and restaurants. One resident recounted how frightening the atmosphere was, stating that it became difficult to breathe amidst the chaos.
A police pursuit ensued as officers scrambled to apprehend the attacker. Tragically, during the chase, he fell from a building and died. The mayor of Taipei confirmed that one of the deceased had attempted to intervene and stop the assailant inside the station.
Authorities reported that the attacker was 27 years old and resided in the Taoyuan area. Previously a member of the air force, he was dismissed from his position in 2022. Officials revealed that he had a history of prior criminal cases, although the motive behind his violent actions remains unclear.
