Urgent: Prohibitory Orders Enforced Along India-Bangladesh Border in Assam
The Cachar district administration in Assam has implemented prohibitory orders along the India–Bangladesh border to address illegal movements and safeguard peace and security, as announced in an official release on Wednesday, December 17. These preventive measures respond to concerns over potential infiltration by extremist groups and unauthorized cross-border activities that could disrupt law and order in the area.
District Magistrate Mridul Yadav issued the orders on Tuesday under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to curb the illegal movement of people and goods across the border. The order highlights that unchecked movement, especially at night, can enable illicit activities, including the unauthorized transportation of essential goods and cattle, thereby posing significant risks to public safety.
According to the new regulations, individuals are prohibited from moving within a one-kilometer area along the district’s international border from sunset to sunrise. Additionally, nighttime activities on the River Surma and its high banks within Indian territory are prohibited. The order further restricts boating and fishing in the Surma River, allowing fishing only for local residents under strict conditions for personal use, requiring prior permission from the Circle Officer in Katigorah, and compliance with existing lease agreements.
Permissions for these activities will be closely monitored, with documentation shared with both the District Magistrate and the Commandant of the 170th Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) stationed at Dholchera, ensuring tight coordination between civil and security authorities. Furthermore, the transportation of essential commodities-such as sugar, rice, wheat, edible oil, and salt-will also be restricted during nighttime within a five-kilometer zone along the Bangladesh border. Any exceptions will only be granted after verification by supply officials and will be limited to specific purposes, locations, and time frames.
The administration has clarified that government employees on official duty within the border areas are exempt from these restrictions, ensuring the continuity of administrative and security operations in the region.
