Neeraj Ghaywan’s ‘Homebound’ Shines as Oscar Contender for Best International Feature
Filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan’s acclaimed drama “Homebound” has made headlines after being shortlisted for the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards, marking it as one of 15 films vying for recognition from around the globe. The film tells the story of two rural friends navigating their dreams and challenges. It will compete against entries from countries including Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Norway, Palestine, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Tunisia. Notable shortlisted films include “Belén” from Argentina, “The Secret Agent” from Brazil, “It Was Just an Accident” from France, “Sound of Falling” from Germany, and “The President’s Cake” from Iraq, among others.
Producer Karan Johar expressed his excitement about the announcement, describing the journey of “Homebound” as “overwhelming.” He shared the official Oscars shortlist on social media, exclaiming that he felt “proud, elated, and over the moon.” Johar highlighted the film’s remarkable trajectory, beginning with its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and culminating in this prestigious Oscar recognition. He acknowledged Ghaywan’s vision and extended appreciation to the cast and crew for their dedication.
Ghaywan celebrated the achievement by sharing Johar’s message on his social media channels. Produced by Johar and Adar Poonawalla, “Homebound” features talented actors Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor in leading roles. The film draws inspiration from journalist Basharat Peer’s New York Times article “Taking Amrit Home,” which also references the themes of friendship and loss during a pandemic.
Set against the complex backdrop of caste and identity, “Homebound” explores the childhood bond between a Muslim and a Dalit as they strive for a police job, a position that symbolizes the dignity that has historically been out of reach for them.
On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also released shortlists for 11 additional categories, including the newly established Casting Oscar. Nominations for the 98th Academy Awards are set to be announced on January 22, 2026. The awards ceremony is scheduled for March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and will be broadcast live worldwide.
