Imran Khan Faces Major Setback as Sisters and PTI Leaders Charged Under Anti-Terror Laws
Former Prime Minister Imran Khan is facing further challenges as his sisters, Aleema Khan and Noreen Niazi, along with several leaders and supporters of his Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party, have been charged under anti-terror laws. This legal action follows a sit-in protest they staged outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail on Tuesday. The protest was intended to demand access for family members and lawyers to meet Khan, who has been incarcerated since August 2023.
According to local police, a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against Khan’s sisters, PTI leaders, and supporters, including notable figures like Salman Akram Raja and Naeem Panjotha, at the Saddar Beroni police station. The charges include violations of the Anti-Terrorism Act, as well as Section 120 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which pertains to criminal conspiracy, allegations of assault against police, and breaching Section 144, which restricts public gatherings.
The case was initiated just a day after the protest occurred, and police reported that at least 14 individuals were arrested at the scene. Authorities are actively seeking additional suspects involved in the protest. Reports claim that Khan remains under strict conditions in Adiala Jail, with authorities allegedly enforcing unannounced restrictions on visits, citing concerns that such meetings might be exploited for political purposes. Uzma Khan was the last family member to visit him on December 2.
In recent weeks, the situation surrounding Imran Khan became more precarious when rumors of his possible death circulated on social media, claiming he had been assassinated in jail. This unrest was sparked by unverified posts, including one purportedly from a social media account linked to the “Ministry of Foreign Affairs Baluchistan,” featuring an image suggesting Khan was incapacitated. However, jail authorities quickly dismissed these claims as unfounded, insisting that the former Prime Minister is in “completely good health” within the high-security facility.
