Delhi Schools Transition to Hybrid Classes Amidst Severe Air Pollution Crisis
In response to the deteriorating air quality in Delhi, the Directorate of Education has mandated that all schools conduct classes for students up to Class IX and XI in a hybrid mode. This decision aligns with an order from the Commission for Air Quality Management, which has implemented Stage-IV actions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to combat rising pollution levels in the Delhi-NCR region.
According to a circular issued yesterday, all government, government-aided, and unaided recognized private schools under the Directorate of Education, NDMC, MCD, and the Delhi Cantonment Board are required to provide both in-person and online classes wherever possible until further notice. Meanwhile, students in Classes 10 and 12 will continue to attend classes in person.
The Stage IV measures also include prohibitions on all construction activities and restrict the entry of non-essential polluting trucks into Delhi. This decision comes as the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the national capital has worsened, surpassing the 400 mark in several locations, indicating hazardous conditions.
In addition, the Delhi government has instructed all government and private offices in the city to have at least 50 percent of their workforce work from home. A similar directive had been enacted on November 24 in response to GRAP-3 measures, but it was subsequently retracted after the restrictions were eased later that month.
