Trump Administration Declares White House Ballroom Build a National Security Issue

The Trump administration stated in a recent court filing that the construction of a new ballroom at the White House must proceed due to national security concerns. This response came after the National Trust for Historic Preservation filed a lawsuit last Friday, urging a federal judge to halt the project until it undergoes necessary independent reviews and receives congressional approval.

In its filing, the administration included a declaration from the deputy director of the U.S. Secret Service, indicating that further work is required at the site of the former East Wing to meet safety and security standards. The administration has proposed sharing classified details with the judge privately, away from the plaintiffs.

This legal response provides the most detailed insight into the ballroom project thus far, revealing how swiftly it was approved within the Trump administration and the expansion of its scope. The filing noted that while demolition and construction are ongoing, final plans for the ballroom have yet to be finalized. Below-grade demolition continues, and foundation work is expected to start in January. The construction above ground is not anticipated to begin before April 2026, at the earliest.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a privately funded organization, is pushing for the U.S. District Court to block Trump’s ballroom plans until comprehensive design reviews, environmental assessments, public feedback, and congressional discussions take place.

In October, Trump had the East Wing demolished as part of his ambitious plan for a 90,000-square-foot ballroom estimated to cost $300 million, to be completed before his term concludes in 2029. While the project has faced criticism from historic preservationists, architects, and political opponents, this lawsuit represents the most concrete effort to change or stop the president’s plans for an addition nearly twice the size of the White House before the East Wing’s demolition. A hearing regarding the case was scheduled to take place in federal court in Washington.
