Assam Congress Launches Bold Outreach Drive Amid Doubts from CM

In a significant move ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) will launch its outreach program, named Raijor Padulit Raijor Congress, beginning December 20. APCC president Gaurav Gogoi announced this initiative to the press on Tuesday, emphasizing the goal of connecting Congress leadership with villagers statewide. “As soon as the Winter Session of Parliament concludes, we will begin our ground work,” Gogoi stated.

The outreach program was first revealed during a meeting of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC), led by Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh at Rajiv Bhavan on November 12. This initiative seeks to close the gap between politicians and the populace.

Part of the campaign includes the launch of a dedicated website, www.natunaxom.com, where citizens are invited to share their suggestions with the party. “Through this platform, we can collect digital feedback from the public, starting with input from students aimed at enhancing the education sector,” Gogoi added.

This announcement follows a recent review meeting held by the state unit’s leadership with All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi, focusing on preparations for the 2026 elections.

In response to the Congress’s outreach, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed skepticism about the campaign’s effectiveness, questioning whether it would genuinely challenge the BJP’s electoral efforts. “They may only gain entry to someone’s porch with an invitation. Will the people of Assam invite them, or are they planning uninvited visits? There’s little chance of people welcoming Congress,” Sarma commented during a press conference while attending a beneficiary scheme event in Lumding.

Meanwhile, the opposition coalition, Asom Sonmilito Morcha, is strategizing for the upcoming electoral contest with a focus on seat-sharing arrangements. Addressing the ongoing speculation regarding opposition unity, Gaurav Gogoi mentioned that discussions are taking place privately. “We will only make official announcements regarding alliances once our discussions are finalized,” he noted, asserting that the forthcoming elections “will not be easy for the BJP.”
