SIT Unveils Four Murder Charges in Shocking Zubeen Garg Case
Guwahati, Dec 12: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) filed a chargesheet regarding the death of cultural icon Zubeen Garg in the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Guwahati on Friday. SIT chief Munna Prasad Gupta disclosed the key legal sections invoked against the accused. He stated, “Murder charges have been brought against Siddarth Sarma, Syamkanu Mahanta, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and Amritprabha Mahanta, along with various other offenses. While we have submitted the chargesheet to the court, it isn’t feasible to reveal everything at this stage.” He noted that the main chargesheet spans 2,500 pages, and when combined with supporting documents, it totals over 12,000 pages. Gupta added, “Whatever evidence we found in Singapore has been presented to the court.”
The charges facing the accused include various sections related to criminal conspiracy, murder, extortion, and destruction of evidence. Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19, shocking fans across the region. With the filing of the chargesheet, the investigation transitions into the judicial process. Lawyers involved in the case clarified that the chargesheet will first go through the General Register (GR) branch of the court. After initial processing, it will be examined by the magistrate.
A senior advocate suggested that the high-profile nature of the case could expedite its timeline. “Given its sensational aspects, scrutiny might occur within two or three days. The public will also have access to the chargesheet once it is taken on record by the magistrate,” he remarked. However, concerns about the thoroughness of the investigation persist. “While we sought the chargesheet, the investigation fell short of necessary standards. The incident occurred in Singapore, yet no on-ground investigation was conducted there. We had called for a special probe in that jurisdiction to ensure comprehensive clarity,” another advocate expressed.
Following the magistrate’s preliminary examination, the case will be forwarded to the Sessions Court for trial. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently described Zubeen Garg’s death as “plain and simple murder.” In contrast, the Singapore Police Force, which is conducting a separate investigation, stated that preliminary findings do not suggest foul play, emphasizing that the final report may take up to three additional months.
