Akhil Gogoi Denounces Government’s Inaction in Zubeen’s Death Investigation
Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has raised serious doubts regarding the credibility of the chargesheet filed in relation to the death of prominent Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. On December 12, Gogoi alleged that the investigation appears to be driven by political motives rather than a genuine quest for truth.
For the past 84 days, Gogoi claims that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma has shifted focus away from the priorities of the people of Assam, instead creating a narrative aimed at advancing his political interests. The MLA contended that the chargesheet submitted by the Assam CID does not convincingly classify Zubeen Garg’s death as murder, despite widespread speculation and calls for further clarity.
Gogoi highlighted procedural irregularities in the investigation, noting that the incident took place in Singapore, yet all investigative work was conducted solely from the CID office in Assam. He questioned, “How can an investigating officer prepare a chargesheet without even traveling to Singapore?” He described the document as more of an “election manifesto” for the Chief Minister rather than a legitimate legal filing.
Furthermore, Gogoi accused the government of hastening the chargesheet’s release to ensure that BJP workers face no repercussions leading into the upcoming elections, reminiscent of the challenges faced by party members during the anti-CAA protests. He emphasized the importance of following international protocols for investigations involving incidents outside India, referring to legal precedents such as the Madras High Court’s ruling in the Jayalalithaa case, which he claims has been disregarded in this context.
The MLA dismissed the government’s claim of collecting 3,500 documents and 7,000 statements, labeling them as “meaningless” in the absence of comprehensive on-ground verification. He asserted, “They have not even examined the water where Zubeen Da reportedly drowned, yet they proceeded with a chargesheet. If it were up to me, I would have torn it apart.”
Gogoi challenged the Chief Minister’s assertions regarding the motives for the alleged murder, arguing that the chargesheet fails to clarify how the murder supposedly occurred. He suggested that the document might actually allow those guilty to evade justice rather than facilitating their punishment.
Moreover, he criticized the Chief Minister’s comment that the matter is now in the hands of the court, arguing that flawed foundations cannot lead to true justice. “Even if you bang your head against a wall, justice cannot happen this way,” he said.
In conclusion, Gogoi drew parallels with the anti-CAA movement, suggesting that the chargesheet was strategically filed to limit the ability of BJP workers to maneuver freely in villages during the election season.
