Golaghat, Dec 12: The Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA) Golaghat branch demonstrated their commitment to combating drug abuse by staging a significant protest on Friday. This rally aimed to raise awareness about the increasing consumption of dangerous drugs and intoxicants in the district, especially in tea garden areas and rural communities.
In an initiative spearheaded by ATTSA members, a large-scale anti-drug motorcycle awareness rally was organized, promoting a drug-free Assam. The rally commenced in Jamuguri, traversed through Merapani-a region recognized as a high-risk area-and culminated in Golaghat town. More than a hundred participants carried banners and shouted slogans urging the youth to reject drugs and protect their futures.
Monuj Mohanada, president of the ATTSA Golaghat District Committee, emphasized that the rally was a response to the escalating drug crisis facing the region. “We are organizing an awareness bike rally on drug abuse and consumption. Through this rally, we wish to urge everyone, particularly the youth of Golaghat district and Assam, to avoid drug use and promote a healthy society,” Mohanada remarked. He added that the rising issue of drug consumption has deeply concerned the community. “Our main objective is to create a drug-free Assam,” he said.
Anuj Kurmi, president of the ATTSA Golaghat branch, expressed grave concerns about the expanding drug network within the area. “We are troubled by how the drug trade is progressing towards destroying a generation, particularly in tea estate regions and rural areas like Golaghat, Merapani, and Goronga,” Kurmi stated. He noted that the daily drug trade continues to afflict districts such as Golaghat. “If each student or young person is not educated about this issue, we will never be free from it. This rally seeks to tackle the problem in critical zones like Merapani,” he added.
The ATTSA Golaghat District Association also called upon local law enforcement to ramp up efforts against drug peddlers in the region.
