End of Sivasagar Book Fair: Over Rs 70 L in Books Sold!
The Sivasagar Book Fair, organized by the social group ‘Khoj’ along with local residents, concluded on Thursday after an 11-day celebration of literature. The event, which took place in Sivasagar, saw impressive sales, with books worth over Rs 70 lakh being purchased by visitors.
The closing ceremony featured notable attendees, including Dr. Jagadish Patgiri, Vice-Chancellor of Sibsagar University, who served as the chief guest. He was joined by Dr. Jyoti Prasad Saikia, Vice-Chancellor of JB University, and Akhil Gogoi, MLA of Sivasagar, among other prominent citizens. During the event, Jay Jyoti Gogoi, secretary of Khoj, addressed the audience and shared a message from renowned author Imran Shah, emphasizing the significance of reading.
In his remarks, Dr. Patgiri suggested that the term ‘festival of books’ captures the essence of the event better than ‘book fair.’ He highlighted that the first book fair in Assam began in 1984, marking a transformative moment in the region’s cultural landscape. He further noted the challenges of becoming an avid reader, asserting that dedicated readers form the foundation of an enlightened society. Dr. Saikia contributed to the discussion by addressing different reading habits and their impacts.
As part of the concluding festivities, prizes were awarded to winners of various competitions held throughout the week, celebrating both literary achievement and community engagement.
