Unveiling the Hidden Costs: Youth, Rare Earths, and Violence in Africa

India’s economy is increasingly influenced by electric cars, solar rooftops, and rechargeable gadgets, presenting an optimistic view of the transition to clean energy. However, this revolution comes with significant challenges, particularly regarding the global competition for rare earth minerals, youth unemployment, and climate change, which are fueling new waves of violence in several African regions.

These conflicts extend beyond mere ethnic tensions or political instability; they stem from deeper structural issues. Rising temperatures, crop failures, and declining livelihoods all contribute to unrest, exacerbated by the mining of essential minerals required for the global green transition.

Africa holds a substantial portion of the world’s critical mineral reserves, including cobalt, lithium, and rare earth elements. Nations like Burundi, Madagascar, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have become increasingly pivotal in global supply chains. Yet, the extraction of these resources often has dire consequences for local communities, characterized by unsafe working conditions, environmental degradation, and scant financial returns for surrounding populations. Armed groups frequently exploit these mining regions, transforming them into conflict zones.

Youth unemployment plays a crucial role in this dynamic, as millions of young Africans turn to artisanal and small-scale mining due to a lack of economic options and the adverse effects of climate change on agriculture. These mines usually operate outside regulations, creating unsafe and unofficial working environments. Large-scale industrial mining operations often fail to generate enough jobs relative to the minerals extracted. As a result, many children and young people find themselves in hazardous situations, extracting minerals while witnessing the wealth generated from their land flowing overseas, leaving them disenfranchised and vulnerable to recruitment by militias or illegal mining networks.

Climate change compounds these issues, with rising temperatures, droughts, and unpredictable rainfall jeopardizing local businesses and farming practices. Despite these dangers, mining remains one of the few viable options for youth employment. The combination of economic stress driven by climate change and the lure of valuable minerals leads to increased instability and, at times, violent conflict.

To address these challenges, a systemic overhaul is necessary, focusing on improved governance, robust protections for mining communities, and local value addition. Governments and businesses must invest in local infrastructure and skill development while formalizing artisanal mining to ensure safe job creation. Transparency in licensing and extraction processes is essential to enable African communities to benefit from their natural resources rather than face exploitation. Foreign consumers, notably from India, have a responsibility to demand ethical sourcing and to ensure that the advantages of green energy do not come at the cost of human rights violations.

Shifting to green energy comes with moral obligations. It is essential to evaluate both the technology we utilize and the origins of the resources that power it. Africa’s youth, already burdened by unemployment and climate challenges, should not bear the hidden costs of a global green revolution. A truly equitable transition will require investment in solutions that safeguard human lives while advancing renewable energy.

Ultimately, the future of sustainable energy hinges on treating both people and the environment with the dignity they deserve. The fundamental goals of the green transition are jeopardized if we continue to overlook the violence inherent in our supply chains.
