JetBlue Airways is set to unveil its first-ever airport lounge, named BlueHouse, at John F. Kennedy International Airport’s Terminal 5. Inspired by the essence of a New York City apartment, this spacious 9,000-square-foot lounge will officially open its doors at 5 a.m. ET on December 18, marking a significant milestone for the airline that has been in operation for nearly 26 years.
With the launch of BlueHouse, JetBlue enters a competitive arena alongside established carriers like Delta Air Lines and major credit card companies such as Chase, American Express, and Capital One. These companies are all vying for the attention of travelers willing to invest more in premium experiences. Southwest Airlines is also stepping into this market, as reported by CEO Bob Jordan, who announced the airline’s active pursuit of a network of airport lounges.
The BlueHouse lounge is part of JetBlue’s strategic expansion, with plans for a second lounge in Boston next year. Featuring an Art Deco design, the lounge will offer complimentary Wi-Fi, flexible seating arrangements, and New York culinary staples, including breakfast favorites like bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches and classic pastrami on rye for lunch. Beverage options will feature Joe Coffee and the craft beer chain Greats of Craft, while the lounge’s cocktail partner, Please Don’t Tell, adds an exclusive touch-echoing the ambiance of the popular East Village speakeasy.
Access to BlueHouse will be available to various travelers. Customers booked in JetBlue’s trans-Atlantic Mint business class can invite one complimentary guest, with additional visitors charged at $39. Holders of JetBlue’s Premier Mastercard credit card also qualify for similar guest privileges. Additionally, members with Mosaic 4 elite frequent flyer status will enjoy access. Starting in February, JetBlue plans to offer passes for those with lower status tiers, customers flying Mint on cross-country routes, and other credit cardholders, although specific pricing details have yet to be released. Passengers traveling with basic economy tickets, however, will not have access to the lounge.
Despite its capacity of 140 people, BlueHouse is smaller than some lounges offered by larger competitors but aligns with JetBlue’s focused network strategy. The airline has been diligently restructuring, eliminating unprofitable routes and repositioning aircraft to cater to the burgeoning high-end leisure travel market, aiming to achieve profitability. Recently, JetBlue entered a partnership with United Airlines, strengthening their collaborative efforts, particularly in New Jersey, where United operates a significant hub at Newark.
As this new lounge opens, JetBlue reinforces its commitment to enhancing customer experiences while positioning itself against larger industry players. With BlueHouse, travelers can expect a blend of comfort and premium service, reflecting the vibrant spirit of New York City itself.
