Total Shutdown at ICR: What You Need to Know Now!
ITANAGAR, 9 Dec: A 12-hour bandh organized by the Arunachal Pradesh Indigenous Youth Organisation (APIYO), the Indigenous Youth Force of Arunachal (IYFA), and the All Naharlagun Youth Organisation (ANYO) brought the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) to a standstill on Tuesday. The groups initiated the bandh to protest the state government’s alleged inaction regarding their demands, which include the closure of illegal mosques and effective measures against illegal Bangladeshi migrants in the state.
During the shutdown, all businesses, educational institutions, and government offices, except those conducting exams, remained closed. Streets in the region were largely empty, with minimal vehicular traffic observed as the day progressed. The nearby town of Doimukh, not part of the ICR, also experienced a shutdown, with most shops closing.
Naharlagun police detained 29 individuals during the bandh, including key figures such as ANYO president Kipa Doka, APIYO general secretary Tapor Maying, and IYFA president Kamta Phassang. According to Naharlagun Superintendent of Police Dr. Nyelam Nega, all detainees were released two hours after the bandh concluded, and no charges had been filed against them. The Itanagar police also detained six individuals, but no incidents of property damage or injuries were reported.
After being released, Tapor Maying stated that the bandh was successful, emphasizing that the police’s actions indicated its impact. He noted that most members were detained early in the morning, around 2 a.m., which prompted him to join the protests openly. Maying hinted at future actions to be determined in an upcoming executive meeting of the involved organizations.
Home Minister Mama Natung responded to the situation by stating he is open to discussions with APIYO, IYFA, and ANYO members. He urged them to understand that a bandh is not a solution and appealed for restraint from taking the law into their own hands. Natung also acknowledged the government’s concern over illegal migrants, assuring that efforts are being made to address the issue collaboratively for the safety and security of the state.
