Tezpur University Protests: A Bold Step Towards New Assam’s Future
Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, has praised the student-led protests at Tezpur University as a pivotal moment for Assam, while condemning the government’s handling of the unrest that has plagued the institution since mid-September. The protests were ignited by the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg, prompting students and faculty to take a firm stand against the university administration, culminating in a complete shutdown that began on November 29.
Gogoi expressed his disappointment regarding the government’s approach to the situation at Tezpur University, stating on X, “It is disappointing to see the manner in which Tezpur University is being tackled by the government.” He also acknowledged the commendable conduct of the university’s students and faculty, describing them as “Firm, unbending, and dignified.”
The Congress leader, who oversees the party’s state unit, drew connections between the ongoing demonstrations and Garg’s well-known proclamation of independence from caste and religious identity. Reflecting on Garg’s memorable words, “I don’t have any caste, religion or God. I am free. I am the Kanchenjunga,” Gogoi characterized the protests as embodying the “Kanchenjunga spirit of new Assam,” invoking the legacy of the legendary singer.
Tensions rose at the university when students accused Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh and the administration of failing to show appropriate respect for Garg during the state’s mourning period. Gogoi highlighted the historical significance of Tezpur University, which was approved by Parliament in 1994, with its origins tied to the student movements that swept through Assam in the late 1980s.
“Today, we see the power of Gen Z again,” Gogoi remarked. “The students and faculty of Tezpur University stand tall like #kanchanjunga. Late Zubeen Da would be proud of you.” He encapsulated this sentiment with the phrase “This is #NatunAxom,” indicating a new Assam.
Protesters have pledged to continue their shutdown until they receive official confirmation from the Centre regarding the removal of the vice-chancellor.
