Israel’s Bold Move: ‘New Border’ Declared as Yellow Line in Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan-What’s Next for Hope and Peace?
Amid ongoing concerns about the stability of the ceasefire in Gaza, Israel has reaffirmed its commitment to the newly defined “Yellow Line” as its operational boundary. This declaration came from Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, chief of the Israeli military, who stated, “We have operational control over extensive parts of the Gaza Strip and we will remain on those defensive lines. The Yellow Line is a new border line-serving as a forward defensive line for our communities and a line of operational activity,” according to AFP.
The Yellow Line, established under the ceasefire negotiated by former President Donald Trump, mandates that the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) retreat behind this line. The area to the east, currently under Israeli control, comprises approximately 53-58% of the Gaza Strip. While its status remains temporary and acts as a de facto military border, plans for future peace negotiations outline that Israel will withdraw further from this area in subsequent phases, potentially reducing its territorial hold to 40% and ultimately 15% after a series of withdrawals and the introduction of an International Stabilization Force (ISF).
Zamir’s comments come in the wake of a statement by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who indicated that the two sides may soon enter the second phase of the ceasefire agreement. During a press conference alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Netanyahu noted that progress towards this new phase is contingent upon Hamas returning the remains of Israeli police officer Ran Gvili, who was killed during the October 7, 2023, attacks. The return of Gvili’s body-to be exchanged for 15 Palestinian remains-will mark the conclusion of the first phase of Trump’s 20-point ceasefire plan.
As international observers watch closely, the implications of Israel maintaining its grip on the Yellow Line raise questions about the future of Gaza and the ongoing peace process. With the upcoming negotiations and military strategies intertwined, the region remains in a precarious balance-one that could shift dramatically based on the actions of both Israel and Hamas in the near future.
As tensions continue to simmer, the world waits to see whether the ceasefire can endure, or if new challenges will arise that could jeopardize hopes for lasting peace in the region.
