In a troubling incident, a group of individuals, including a journalist and leaders of a national organization, have been arrested for extortion and attempted robbery on a national highway. This occurred in Golaghat, where police apprehended four individuals, one of whom is a journalist from a private portal, amid allegations of attempting to intimidate and rob the driver of a heavy truck transporting goods from Mangaldai to Dimapur.
According to a report by ET Now, the suspects include Bitu Munda (the journalist), Denis Bora, Pranjal Bora, and Gautam Thengal, all believed to have connections with the national organization. Allegations against the group had been raised previously, stating that they had extorted money from various cargo vehicles on National Highway 39. Police have also indicated that the group was linked to a recent robbery incident at a residence in Rangajan.
Denis Bora, an official from the Assam Nationalist Youth Students’ Association, claimed, “We were following the loaded vehicle because the sale of the goods is prohibited in Golaghat district, and soon after, the police detained us.” Another suspect stated, “I am not part of any organization, I was just accompanying them.”
Bitu Munda, the detained journalist, asserted that he was filming a video on his mobile, responding to claims from members of the organization that a loaded vehicle was present, when he was apprehended by the police.
Notably, this group, led by Denis Bora, has faced severe accusations in the past for allegedly transacting money using secretly transported goods from China on the national highway. This raises critical questions about the extent of criminal involvement amongst those operating under the guise of a national organization. The police continue to investigate the matter, and further details are expected to emerge as the inquiry progresses.
