Major Drug Bust: Rs. 4.65 Crore Heroin Seized in Assam Operation
Security forces in Assam have made a significant breakthrough in their anti-narcotics efforts, seizing heroin valued at Rs 4.65 crore near Jhujang Pahar in Cachar district. This operation took place during a joint effort between the Assam Rifles and Assam Police, as officials reported on Wednesday. The authorities acted on specific intelligence, leading to the operation that uncovered the contraband concealed within 50 soap cases.
This seizure marks the second major drug haul in Cachar within just 48 hours. Earlier, on November 9, another joint operation resulted in the recovery of methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 6 crore. In that instance, a Silchar resident was arrested while transporting 20,000 tablets, commonly referred to as ‘Yaba,’ along the Silchar bypass. Authorities also confiscated his mobile phone for further investigation.
A defense spokesperson noted that these coordinated operations are a crucial step towards disrupting drug trafficking networks that have exploited Assam as a transit route. The Assam Rifles continue to play an essential role in combating this illicit trade through regular, intelligence-driven actions throughout the Northeast region.
Officials highlighted that the proximity of the region to Myanmar-whose 1,643-km unfenced border touches Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh-has made it a significant entry point for heroin and methamphetamine smuggling into India. Several districts in Mizoram and Manipur share extensive, porous borders with Myanmar, complicating enforcement efforts.
Over the years, regions within Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, and southern Assam have emerged as major corridors for drug syndicates facilitating the movement of narcotics to mainland India and beyond.
